Minor: Ihuoma body development (Feedback appreciated!)

Knowing that the previous designs of Ihuoma were a compact version of my realisitc style, I had a chat with Alan to see how I can adjust the style to be simpler, and follow the simple rules of the cartoon anatomy, as I was adding too much detail (i.e muscles, clothing) to the character. These are sketches I've done after looking at more references (at the bottom of the page).

These traditional sketches are studies of the simple style found in Cartoon Network cartoons, mainly the show "Steven Universe", which has characters with bold, defining shapes and simple costumes and colours that make each character distinct.

Minor Project | Interim Crit Presentation

Minor: Ihuoma development

For Ihumoa in style's A and B, she feels not as cartoony as I was hoping; more of a compact version of my usual style. I drew the body again in a more simpler form, and a more detailed form. I need to think about and have guidance on drawing in a cartoon style.

Minor: Other superheroes

Some sketches of the other heroes (i'm starting by making three characters first). The male is a gay hero (i've yet to come up with his superpower/ how he tackles homophobia), but not created in a way that is stereotypical, i.e camp. I'm thinking of making him Indian/Asian too.

The ladies below are initial experiments, perhaps they suffer with mental health but thier inner power gets them through the battle within their own minds.

Minor: Superhero: Ihuoma Sade

These designs of Ihuoma (work in progress name) combine her Nigerian heratige, some trinkets that show her scientific/ inventive side (although I feel these need to be emphasised). So far, I'm liking no.2 and no.3

Minor Project: Superhero development

These sketches are exploring other characters in the line-up, and experimenting with costumes.

I have decided on a protagonist, a front-line woman, who is still yet to be named, but she is a Nigerian scientist and inventor who has had her left arm and right leg amputated, however she overcomes her disability by creating her own prosthetics, and she has the power of super strength. Her physical attributes include muscles, voluptuousness and signs of battle i.e scars. The mood board below shows some inspiration for her style.

Minor project: Character shapes and styles

Looking at the influence map of cartoon styles, these are a series of drawings studying them and taking inspiration. I'm most fond of the second and third pages.

Minor: Character style influences

For the "Avengers" style superhero line-up, these types of cartoons played a part in the influence of the sketches I have.

Minor Project: Initial style sketches

These inital sketches explored the initial ideas I had for the superhero characters - looking at creating blind, disabled, transgendered characters and how they would look. These sketches are more on the realisitc style, so they would be simplified later on.

Minor/Major - Mindmap

This mindmap shows the ideas on the message I wish to show with the 'Superhero ad campaign' as well as some issues I need to avoid. Since the cartoon style would appeal more to children, I somehow need to balance the style to suit a more teenage/mature audience as I would like to have a sexy male character to challenge society. I also want people to feel proud of themselves and their own bodies, as well as their nationalities, celebrate LGBT etc.

@Alan @Phil Minor/Major Cartoon style character concepts

In order to create successful models, I need to step away from my comfort zone of drawing characters realisticly. Here, I looked at cartoon styles from things such as Cartoon Network, to figure company Good Smile's nendoroid line. For the superheroes, I'm liking numbers 17 and 18. The characters (not sure how many yet) will be bold characters who are rarely seen in media, so androgyny, gay, plus-size, transgender, and/or Muslim etc, and show them as amazing and strong figures.

Maya Arnold - Fog and Physical Sun and Sky; Portal Light

In this lesson, we took a look at creating a sun and sky environment for this house model. We also played around with lighting and settings. This first render has a spooky Scooby-Doo vibe.

Physical Skies - In the renders below, fog was added for a more mysterious effect.

Portal lights - this gives the effect of fuel coming out of the jet vehicle.
